FAQ’s About Water Storage Tanks
What’s the difference between potable and non-potable tanks?
In this case, the term ‘potable’ refers to tanks that are suitable for storing drinking water for human and animal consumption. We carry a range of potable tanks covering various capacities to suit your needs. Our range of potable IBC water storage tanks are a popular solution for storing and transporting bulk quantities of drinking water – you can often find them at festivals, farms and more remote locations.
Can I convert a non-potable water storage tank to potable?
Potable water tanks are manufactured in a controlled environment to minimise risk of contamination and to conform to standards set by the WRAS (Water Regulations Approval Scheme). This means that from the point of manufacture, tanks are usually designated either as potable or non-potable.
That said, there are some tank types that can be converted from non-potable to potable. For instance, with an IBC container, you can replace the inner bottle with a brand-new, food grade bottle while retaining the original cage in order to safely store and transport drinking water – but in general terms, the answer to this question is unfortunately a ‘no’.
Considerations Around Storage Environments
We have a range of IBC water storage tanks for sale here which are FSSC approved, for drinking water and products designed for human and animal consumption. If the water is intended to be placed outside or stored for long periods of time, we highly recommend choosing a black IBC, as the bottle is designed to prevent UV-rays from reaching the water and causing algae growth.
